Try These Garage Door Color Ideas to Boost Your Homes' Style and Value

Adding a pop of color to your home’s trim and other exterior details can significantly alter the way your home looks. If you pick the right color, it can add to your home’s value, too. When it comes to painting your garage door, the key is to select the right color for your home’s style and for your neighborhood. And if you’re planning on selling your home, you’re probably going to want to take potential buyers’ tastes into consideration, as well.

Best Garage Door Color Ideas

Your garage door takes up a fair amount of space on your home, which means the color you select can have a big effect on the way your home and property looks. Arguably, the most popular and most common color for garage doors is white, and for good reason. As a neutral shade, white “goes with" any other color, and it also works well with pretty much any architectural design or style. White’s classic look also tends to have the broadest appeal for buyers, so it’s a good option if you plan on putting your home on the market anytime soon.

While white can be a good choice for a lot of homes and garages, sometimes it’s just too bold or stark for the look you’re going for. In those instances, a light tan or gray might be a better choice. Like white, tan and gray are both neutrals, which means they blend well with other colors and can be a great choice for a wide variety of home styles. Tan and pale gray can also be great choices for homes that feature a lot of natural stone, playing up the warmth of natural materials without detracting from their beauty.

Go for Drama

White and lighter colors may be more common, but they're certainly not the only options. For a little more drama, consider painting your garage doors dark gray or black. Both these shades can be great options for traditional or contemporary homes, where the existing architecture can benefit from some added drama and depth. Depending on your specific home’s design, a black garage door can recede into the background or “pop” to create a stunning focal point. If black is a little too harsh for your style, consider a dark brown for similar drama with a little more warmth. A deep, walnut brown exudes warmth, lending a real classic appeal without looking dated.

Still not sure which paint to choose? Visiting a paint store for more garage door color ideas is a good way to spend an hour or so this weekend. Most paint stores have brochures with complete color schemes already laid out so you can get an accurate idea of what you can expect—and eliminate unwelcome surprises.
